Diocesan Sport provides a comprehensive program of diverse sporting and physical activity opportunities for all students and teachers in our school system.

The desired outcome of the Diocese of Wollongong sports program is to foster the development of skilled athletes across our schools, identity and provide opportunities for students who may not be involved in regular sport and physical activity opportunities outside of school and to contribute directly to the physical, social, cognitive and emotional wellbeing of students. Sport is an extension of the classroom where students engage in critical learning skills, build essential interpersonal skills and develop the confidence to know who they are and have a sense of belonging to their school community.

All K-12 schools within the diocese contribute to the development and scope of the sporting opportunities offered through their engagement in the Diocese of Wollongong primary and secondary sports councils. The collaborative sports council forms the basis of the sports program offered and ensures the direct voice of student and school needs are central to decision making. Teaching staff are essential to the program using their talents and sporting background to fill positions of sport conveners, coaches, managers, selectors and officials.

The Diocese of Wollongong sporting structures provides two forms of opportunities for students:

Representative sporting pathway opportunities:

  • Student individual sporting pathways
  • Student officials sporting pathways
  • School based representative team pathways

Participation and development sporting opportunities:

  • Inter-school championship competitions
  • Gala day events in a range of sports

The aim and nature of these activities provides a genuine balance of sport for gifted and talented extension, excellence, exercise, enjoyment, team work, participation and community spirit through to a comprehensive participation program and pathway of representation at local, state and national levels.

The recent statement by the Bishops Commission for Evangelisation, Laity and Ministry, titled "Open the Way to Christ," highlights the unique opportunity sport presents for spiritual connection. It emphasises how sport fosters character development and growth in virtue, values which perfectly align with our school sports programs. As Pope Francis states, "Sports can open the way to Christ in those places or environments where, for different reasons, it is not possible to announce Him directly."

“From Kindergarten to Year 12, our diverse sports programs allow students to discover and develop their talents. Sport is more than just competition; it's a valuable learning environment fostering essential values and strong character development. With respect and sportsmanship, athletic fields become classrooms where students strive for excellence, build healthy habits, work in teams and grow as individuals”.
