Managing HSC Stress and Anxiety

29 August 2024

The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is a significant milestone, but it often comes with a side of stress and anxiety. As a student in a Catholic school in NSW, you're not alone in feeling the pressure. Rest assured, there are proven strategies to help you navigate this challenging time. Here's how to keep your cool and achieve your best.

Stress is a normal response to pressure and can help us respond to the challenges in life, but excessive stress can also affect our mental health and impact things like concentration, sleep and appetite. The good news is that the way you respond to stress can make a big difference to your overall wellbeing.

Tip 1: Prioritise your wellbeing

Think of yourself as an athlete preparing for a big game. You need to be in top physical and mental shape to perform at your best. Here's how:

  • Get enough sleep: Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Eat nutritious meals: Avoid sugary and processed foods, and fuel your body with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Exercise regularly: Even a short walk can clear your head and reduce stress.
  • Practice relaxation techniques: Deep breathing, mindfulness, or yoga can help calm your nervous system.

Tip 2: Create a realistic study plan

A well-structured study plan is your roadmap to success. Break down your subjects into smaller, manageable tasks, and set achievable daily or weekly goals. Don't forget to schedule breaks and time for relaxation.

Tip 3: Find your study style

Everyone learns differently. Experiment with different study techniques, like flashcards, mind maps, or summarising notes, to find what works best for you. Consider joining a study group or finding a study buddy for extra support and motivation.

Tip 4: Seek help when you need it

Remember, you're not alone. Your teachers, school counsellors, and family are there to support you. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you're struggling with a particular subject or feeling overwhelmed. There are also many resources available online and in your community.

Tip 5: Stay positive and believe in yourself

The HSC is just one chapter in your life story. Keep things in perspective and remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments. Celebrate your successes, learn from your mistakes, and most importantly, believe in your ability to succeed.

Remember, your Catholic school community is here for you every step of the way. We believe in your potential and are committed to helping you thrive during the HSC and beyond!
